We will be making one book. A 6-sided foldable book which is 5.5” diameter.
OPTIONAL and RECOMMENDED: You can make the larger 6-sided 8” diameter circle book. You need 6 pieces 8” square paper decorated on both sides. Gelli-print or watercolor is great. Paper should be cardstock or mixed media weight. (mine is Canson mixed media 98 lb) Front and back should be contrasting or at least different. (you can decorate the back after, but it’s harder.)
BIO: Micaela Seidel, grandmother, mother, sister, friend, and dyed-in-the-wool New Mexican. She has worked in the arts all her life, either creating, curating, or teaching art.

Juliana Coles, Albuquerque fine artist, has been involved with artist books and visual journaling since 1987. What began as a simple sketchbook practice in blank sketchbooks, Juliana now works almost exclusively in found books, aka altered books. At January’s Libros meeting, Juliana will present an altered book ‘show and tell’ of her highly detailed and expressive books, discuss how altering a book differs from working in a blank book, share where she finds her books as well as explain her altering methods. Members are encouraged to bring their own altered books for show and tell, as well as bring a found book for a giveaway/book exchange.
Members are encouraged to bring their own altered books for a 'show and tell.' Please bring a found book any size for a giveaway/book exchange. A 'found' book is a pre-existing printed, bound and published book. It can be all text, it can be all images, it can be a sheet music book, a children's book or board book. It can be a coffee table book, a young adult novel or history book, it can be vintage, it can be pristine, it can be falling apart. These books can be 'found' at "tiny libraries," monthly library sales at the main library, thrift stores, or even your own book shelves.
April 1 2023, Box assembly for collaborative book, Mita Saldaña
We will spend the time assembling the book. This book requires a slipcase, which will be completed at the April meeting.

For those of you that are participating in the "Windows" Collaborative Project, the March 4, 2023, Libros meeting will be focused on distributing the pages to all participants. Each of you will then decide on the order you want them to appear in your book. We will glue the pages to the pre-made accordion spines, then glue the spine into your covers. We will make the boxes to hold the books at the April meeting.
Note for those that are not included in the collaborative project, we will have three (3) extra copies (library, archive and one extra) that will need to be assembled as well. If you would like to participate in that process, just let Susan Wright know. For those of you that are left, please attend anyway, as we will have some extra short sections of the accordions to work with so you can learn a new skill. Please bring some 5 x 5 card stock sheets that you can use to glue. If you want to make covers at home and bring, you can get a real understanding of how this book is made.
Julie will present her collection of books, starting with the first book she made, a scroll on an ace bandage, created in a workshop with Sas Colby at Anderson Ranch. From then on she was hooked, making a little book everyday for a month. She will show her journals, and how ideas for books and series are worked out in her handmade workbooks. Some of the workbooks result in a finished book, and both will be shown. She often experiments with different forms, depending on the ideas she is exploring. Her work often deals with flow, the flow through time as in metamorphosis, the flow through space as in a journey, the flow through ideas from a spark to a finished story. Her training as a sculptor always informs the structure of the finished book. Many books and journals will be available for hands-on examining and questions will be encouraged.
Participants are encouraged to bring their journals to share.
Julie Wagner has been a working artist for over 60 years. She lived in an old adobe house in El Rito, NM, for 45 years with her blacksmith husband and many dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, geese and rabbits, drawing, painting, sculpting, and always making one-of-a-kind and limited edition books. She received a BA in Studio Art from Oberlin College in 1962, attended the Brooklyn Museum School, and then earned an MFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1966. She has taken many workshops in book arts and has taught both children and adults through workshops and artists-in-the-schools programs. Her work is in many public and private collections, and has been exhibited across the United States. She has been a member of the Santa Fe Bag from its inception and a member of Libros since she moved to Albuquerque in November 2021.

You will create a Traveler’s Notebook (TN), which you can use as a planner, sketchbook, journal, art journal, scrapbook, study guide, meal planner, recipe book, and so much more.
Annie will be demonstrating a one-page decorative exercise that would then be torn down to make a smaller book. It would go well after the lesson in making marks.
Ever wonder about mark-making? Afraid to try it for fear that you’ll lose that awesome painting or that fantastic journal spread? Karen and Esther will be showing different ways to add marks to your artwork.
Esther will be doing demos only, as her techniques are pretty messy. She plans to bring a big box to do some demos inside (to catch overspray). No materials or supplies from members are needed for this portion.
Karen’s take on mark-making, while similar to Esther’s, will be a bit different. She will be leading members in various exercises to find and design marks that are meaningful to you. We will be working with just white and black paper and mediums. Gold can also be added if you wish.
Susan made this exceptionally beautiful zig-zag accordion book for a Visual Journaling member who is moving away. This one will be a ton of fun to make.
