Wallet/Envelope Book Demo by Beverly Tones

Beverly is going to show us how to make this awesomely cool wallet/envelope book. (Original technique by Meredith Jane Klein, from Bound & Lettered magazine, Summer 2018 edition)

We will be meeting IN PERSON. Social hour is from 9:00 to 10:00, then our regular meeting begins at 10:00. Please be prompt for this class, as we will start right after the regular business meeting

Personalized Kraft-tex Adventure Book by Nicole White

In this class, we will explore the endless possibilities of Kraft-tex.

Kraft-tex is a paper product that feels like a combination of fabric, leather, and vinyl all put together. You can wash it and sew it just like fabric! You can Gelli plate, draw, paint, stamp, print, and emboss on Kraft-tex. Kraft-tex does NOT have a grain, so you can use either side and in any direction you like. We will create a fun little travel-themed book with a hand-decorated/painted Kraft-tex cover. 

During class, we will design, draw, paint, Gelli plate, stitch and cut the Kraft-tex cover!

Collaborative Book @ Manzano Mesa

Each participant will create a 6" x 8" folio decorated on both sides with their interpretation of the "hidden message" theme. Everyone will have to make one folio for each participant, the final number to be determined. We will assemble the books at the March meeting.

Paste Papers with Elizabeth McKee

The objective of this on-line demonstration/mini workshop is to demonstrate some new techniques for pasting paper while creating a reference book for further exploration .  We will work on sheets of Arches Text Wove paper that are cut down to pieces that are approximately 12.25” x 5” (31 cm x 12 cm) so that people who wish to participate during the presentation can do so. Later these can be assembled into drum leaf bound books.

Elizabeth’s nomad’s life has carried her from New Guinea to Australia, Iowa, Japan, Zambia, Canada, Malaysia, Florida, Bangladesh, Kenya, Uganda, Maryland, Russia and Albuquerque. Not exactly in that order. In August 2015 she moved to Albuquerque, NM where she is putting down roots. She discovered calligraphy in Japan in 1970. Was happy to rediscover it in English in 1980. She was introduced to paste paper play on her friend's back porch sometime in the '90's but was not terribly interested in it until she saw it used as a background for fine art. Her books with paste paper backgrounds are included in the collections of the National Museum of Women in the Art, Harvard's Houghton Library, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, as well as private collections around the world. Seth Apter – The Illuminated Scroll

An Illuminated Scroll is typically a historical document on which decorative borders and small drawings are added to the text. We are going to take this traditional concept and mixed-mediafy both the structure and the illustrations. Given the limits of time, we will be focused primarily on creating the structure – which will fold rather than roll and nest within its own attached folded folio. We will also start the surface layers using paints, inks, and the Gelli Plate. If time permits, I will briefly demo one approach to adding additional layers to the scroll. You will get a good start on your scroll but will need to complete it after the session. Check your email for the supply list and more details.

Seth Apter is a mixed media artist, instructor, author and designer from New York City who truly believes in the power of art to bring people together and strengthen our communities. His artwork has been exhibited in multiple exhibitions and can be found in numerous books and national magazines. He has published two books of his own, The Pulse of Mixed Media and The Mixed-Media Artist. Seth loves the creative energy that occurs when artists and makers are brought together and has spent a great deal of time teaching workshops - both online and live. Closer to home he is an instructor at Pratt Institute in NYC. As a designer, he currently has collections with many companies, including Impression Obsession, StencilGirl Products, PaperArtsy, WOW and Aladine. Art for Seth is everything and he believes that sharing the process just makes it even better.

Kate Padilla – Mini Leather books

Please join us as we welcome Libros Member Kate Padilla who will demonstrate how to make this beautiful Little Traveler book.

This booklet requires only a simple pamphlet stitch, however, two needles are used and the threads are twisted in the center. It's also a substantial book as it requires 32 sheets of text-weight paper to create two signatures. This book also offers us the challenge of adding a snap as a closure for the small book.

Kate Padilla is both an artist and a poet. Her first experience making books was during a class she took at the University of New Mexico. As a member of Libros and Book Study Group, she has taken many more classes during the past two decades. She has won awards at the State Fair for her unique books, many in which she tells stories of her family life and her years of travel.

She studied printmaking at CNM and in Mexico, and is currently working with Encaustics. Last year her first poetry book, Apples Rot on the Ground, was published by Finishing Line Press. She is retired, after a career as journalist, congressional aide, environmental planner and Bureau of Land Management manager of the Socorro, New Mexico office.

Fabric Paper with Karen Woolsey

In addition to Show & Share from the recent NM State Fair, we’re going to do two techniques. They both use pretty much the same supplies. Be sure to have lots of fluid-type glue, you’ll be using a lot. PVA won’t work for this, the glue has to stay wet.

Pick a project of your choice to work on as well as bring a show and tell of what you've worked on these last few months. If you had things in the Fair that won, please bring those as well!

Note: Programs run from August – June. There is no regularly scheduled meeting in July.
