Join us for a one-session, 90-minute online class where we create a one-of-kind mini artist book. Measuring 2.5 x 2.5 inches when closed, we will build this book from scratch using basic materials and a no-sew binding. After learning the basic technique, you will be able to use it to easily create books of any size. Once our books are bound and our covers are covered, we will move to the inside where Seth will demonstrate his approach to abstract collage.
Given that the class is only 90-minutes, you will not have time to finish collaging all the pages in your book. But you will absolutely have time to complete the book structure, learn the collage techniques and start working on the pages.

This is a beautiful and simple book to create.
Your membership must be in good standing to attend this class! If your Membership has expired, this is a special invitation for you to renew your membership for just $15 and have access to upcoming online classes. The next renewal is in August 2021.
Join Seth Apter for a 90-minute online mixed media workshop that is both technique- and project-based. We will be making a concertina book – also known as an accordion book – which will nest inside a metal tin. The book structure itself is easy to make, which will give us plenty of time to focus on surface design. Seth will be taking you through the steps of altering metal surfaces, allowing you to take a shiny new tin, perhaps with a design that you do not like, and turn it into a metalicious masterpiece. Seth will also guide you step-by-step through his process of building a dynamic surface design on paper – without any paint. You will leave the class with a one-of-a-kind project and a slew of surface design techniques that you can apply to your mixed media practice. Check your email for supply list.

We will assemble the annual collaborative book during this zoom meeting.
The Libros Collaborative Book for 2021 will be a 3"x 3" book with the theme: Gifts of 2020. For most people, this year has been bad, miserable, or worse. So your job, should you choose to accept it, is to find something good you received or learned, like a gift. Then translate that into a 3x3 folio and make enough of your folio for all participants. The committee chose this project because it works well without having to meet in person. (Please check the LIBROS Newsletter for more details.)
Give and receive a 'gift of love' from a Libros Member. We have 16 people signed up! Please send your gift by January 20th!
We had so much fun with the gift exchange, and encourage you to participate.
Do you have some books with pesky problems like torn or loose pages, breaks in the text where you can see the spine material, torn inner hinges, or books with a “loose binding”? I will demonstrate some basic book repair techniques like page repair, tipping pages in, tightening a loose spine, and inner hinge repair. We will also discuss tools and materials to use including different types of paper and paste/glue. Get any books you may have at home ready so I can answer questions you may have about specific books or problems.

Suzy will be demonstrating techniques and inspiration for working with water-based media at the July LIBROS meeting, via Zoom. Watercolor will be explored in many formats (tubes, pans, liquid, and pencil) as well as markers and water-soluble ink pencils. She will discuss how these different items can be used to enhance and decorate handmade books and other multimedia projects.
Join LeeAnn Meadows online as she shows her gratitude journal process and demonstrates how you can create your own. She will provide downloadable instructions and references.
1. Paper beads: using scraps and trimmings, one can make cylindrical, cone, double-cone, even oval beads. (Color/paper/texture can match the book they are on!) Basic tools: round toothpicks, glue stick. Optional tools: split bead-roller tool, chunk of styrofoam, clear or clear-sparkly fingernail polish.
2. Four ways of attaching a photo in a book or journal, besides just gluing it down: slots in which to slide each corner of the photo, commercial "photo corners," self-made photo corners of any color/pattern of scrap paper, paper hinges.

Esther Feske attended the University of Iowa where she received MA and MFA degrees, majoring in graphic design, calligraphy and photography. In the pre-computer world, she was designer, proofreader and editor of commercially-printed books for ten years and, with a computer, continues as a graphic designer. She has explored many media – drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage, assemblage, and calligraphy. A bookbinding course from Mita Saldaña in 2001 sparked her passion for making handmade books, as they can include all her artistic interests. She is a four-time winner of “Best of Show” in bookbinding at the State Fair.
Beatriz will be teaching you a simple way to create a small book compact enough to carry with you to work on at your whim.
